Local Data Backup
  • DASC provides remote backup of GIS data to local governments in Kansas for free.

  • Local governments in the State of Kansas are invited to use DASC as an off-site data backup location. In the event of an emergency, DASC will be able to efficiently share data with regional and state agencies.

DASC has put together some Guidelines and Tips to help you with this service.

  • Local governments can send DASC their data using the method that suits their needs best:

    • Physical transfer via external hard drive
    • Remote transfer via file transfer (FTP) (Instructions follow.)
  • County backup status as of October, 2009:

FTP Instructions

Backing up your data using FTP

These instructions are also available in PDF format.

To keep your data secure on DASC's servers, you will need to use an FTP (file transfer protocol) client. If you already have an FTP client, you can continue to use it with these settings:

  • Contact DASC (call 785-864-2000) to get a user name and password
  • DASC's FTP host name is backup.kansasgis.org
  • Connect using port 21

If you don't know or aren't sure if you have a suitable FTP client, DASC recommends FireZilla and has downloads and instructions for how to use it.

Download and install FileZilla

Download the FileZilla installer. Alternatively, you can go to the FileZilla web site to download the latest Windows version.

Browse to the location of the installer program (FileZilla_3.1.3_win32-setup.exe) and run it. Follow the installation wizard's instructions.

Configure FileZilla to connect to DASC

Open the FileZilla software.

FileZilla should look like this:
